This show presents a series of paintings based on documentary photographs from dance marathons taken in America in the 1930s. The paintings portray dancing couples wearing beautiful dresses and sharp suits. Feet and heads are left outside of the canvas, and the monochrome backgrounds contribute to a feelign of anonymity. The couples take part in competitions and, so desperate to win the prize money, they put their health at risk. This was a brutal set-up, with some couples chained together, and a far cry for recreation and joy. The show is made with a tender hand, and is a remainder of human vulnerability and the depths behind the shiny surfaces.
