'Source of Vision’ shows new paintings by Jonas Bouleau.
Jonas Bouleau is an artist. First and foremost, however, he is a painter. While there is a strong hegemonic narrative that contemporary artists, especially young ones, should leave painting as a medium in order to truly explore the essence of art and their own roles as subversive artists. Bouleau did not leave painting. But Bouleau did depart from it.
With oil on canvas as the final result of his artistic research, Bouleau sees the painting of medium (and the notions of it) as his play field, a space where he can experiment and incorporate other mediums into. In this series of work we see Bouleau explore vision through photography, and photography through painting. By translating photographs to paintings, his interest in the medium of painting within itself shows. Once again, he departs into new realms by turning inwards. Not only to the medium of painting itself, but to the very source of vision itself; our eyes. In the end, the great human mysteries of vision, art, medium, painting, photography and space would be unintelligible without our corporal fact of eyes. This way, Bouleau asks great questions with simple and straight forwards actions.
Jonas Bouleau (b. 1988) holds an MFA from the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, 2015. He has previously exhibited at Nau Gallery, Royal Institute of Art, Tsukuba Art Museum and Gerichtshöfe.
