Domeij Gallery proudly present Ulrika Wärmling and the exhibition Autumn Frills. Wärmling herself introduces the exhibition in the following manner:
Fashion as a bearer of meaning is a constant theme in my paintings. For many years I have explored the fashion style, and subculture called 'lolita' and its different sub styles . Lolita is a Japanese fashion which takes its inspiration from an idealized image of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, but has spread all over the world.
Although I keep in contact with lolitas from other countries my main interest is how the lolita culture manifests itself in Sweden, as it gives me a great opportunity to depict different ways of living and looking, that breaks the norm for how one should look and act in Sweden of today. I have followed a group of lolitas living in Stockholm from a close distance and periodically painted portraits that represents the style.
For this exhibition I have chosen to follow how the group of lolitas meet and socialize through their planned facebooks events, how they meet at cafes or museums. My paintings depict these people, but the exhibition also becomes a group event in itself and a part of the culture that is depicted.
