"Artist celebrates Hackney's community spirit in prize-winning mural
A mural has been unveiled in Hackney by the winner of an art prize open to the best young artists across Europe.
Linea Matei beat more than 200 entrants in the Bright Young Things Take Hackney competition to see her artwork displayed on retail arches at Hackney Walk in east London.
The competition, which was judged by art and design industry leaders, including British fashion designer Christopher Raeburn, aimed to create a high-impact, large-scale display to brighten up the exterior retail walls.
Winning artist Ms Matei said she was inspired by Hackney’s community spirit in creating her work on the two-storey wall.
She said “Hackney’s diversity and multiculturalism are the main factors contributing to residents feeling proud of the borough. This made me know actually what to do: to represent the people, with different backgrounds and stories, through history to the present day and into the future, connected with each other." Matei added that she wanted to create "a mural with bright colours to spread energy, love and connection.”
