Acrylic, Spray paint
69 x 54 x 3 cm
It’s Ladies Night at the Venus Flytrap disco, and the seemingly mundane is revealed as deeply esoteric in Nature. Acrylic paint and 3 fruit flies in glue, over a spray paint background. Height and width are including the frame.
If you happen to possess an X-ray machine, you can find an old painting of mine, underneath Venus Flytrap. Because originally, I painted an Emirati version of the Mona Lisa, as a birthday gift for my wife. I painted that while we lived in Dubai, and I was fascinated with Emirati culture, so the “Mona Lisa” had one of these golden face masks, henna tattoos etc.
But. I was never really satisfied with that painting. And also our daughter got scared by it hehe. So, it got also put in the basement.. But now - now - I brought it back up to my atelier, and spray painted it all bright red. Frame and all! Then I knew from the beginning I wanted to paint venus flytrap, one way or another, because I’ve always been very interested (and kind of disgusted) by them.
But here’s the kicker. After having spray painted it, it was drying outdoors, and when I went to get it the next day, I saw 3 tiny flies that got stuck in the paint! They MUST of course be kept! So while I started painting the plants, I sealed the tiny, dead flies in a drop of glue each, to make them part of the painting! Then in the end when I added the neon deco, I felt like it should be part of the actual frame, so there’s a lot of these scribbles on the edges and outside of the frame (plus some little “surprise” here and there.
So the frame is very much a part of Venus Flytrap, and that is how it’s sold and shipped.
If you are interested in acquiring this piece, I’m happy to supply additional pics, and answer any questions.
