The story of Othello, an African general in the Venetian army who is tricked into suspecting his wife of adultery, Othello is a tragedy of sexual jealousy. First performed around 1604, the play is also a pioneering exploration of racial prejudice. It's probably not Shakespeare's best play but creating a moor (at the time referring dark-skinned people in general) as a hero were probably something controversial. In the play Othello is referred to as a "Barbary horse", a "lascivious Moor", and "the devil".
